More gold than one could ever spend or just completely own all the businesses in 5-6 cities building them all up to 6000+ with one having a shipwright (and that means you can do more or less what the Adventurer does). Merchant - Free trading licences means 4-5 trade routes covering every city on the map with 10+ ships on every route in less than 2 years from the start of the game. Pirate - early military ship gives you a shot, especially if you can pair it with a corvetteīuccaneer - your best previous attributes (hitting unarmed trade convoys and getting fame for it) have been totally taken awayĪdventurer - I still find hardly any advantage to playing this characterĪs it is a trading game, being a merchant is always good.

Merchant (by far) - newest update didn't affect it Now that there are armed merchant convoys, the ranking changes significantly: Getting 10 Fame every time you plundered also let you max out the Concessions quite early.
Especially if you were the Netherlands, you could take a single corvette (matched with one or two of the Netherlands' fluyts) and you could plunder like crazy during wars, which came often. Having trade licenses for your own nation bumped the Buccaneer to the top because you had a base you could trade to right away which negated the Merchant's trade license advantage. Pirate (further back) - forgoing fame allowed you to bring in lots of money, but your cities sufferedĪdventurer (far behind) - I never found a good reason to choose this character for hardcore Before the newest update, the order for the best character was likely (IMO):īuccaneer (just barely) - plundering during war could lead to amazing hauls, and fame gain was incredible This has become even more evident since the 1.1.1 update with armed merchant convoys.
While playing the leisure mode, I feel like the characters are fairly interchangeable, but in hardcore, their differences are quite pronounced. I've been playing this game on hardcore a lot recently.
